Editors Note: Our Essential free WordPress plugins and themes post was originally created in March 2016. From Gutenberg to new plugins, the world of WordPress has changed quite a lot since then, but many of plugins and themes on our original list have lasted the test of time. In this 2019 update, we’ve decided to build on our previous list with all new essential free plugins and themes that we believe your WordPress website can’t be without.

in our initial blog post, we listed a bunch of great free plugins for blogs, business websites and eCommerce stores alike. In our 2019 list below, we’ve expanded upon this with further suggestions to help anyone looking to expand their websites feature-set without spending vast amounts of money in the process.

So, here are 10 more great free plugins to checkout in 2019 and beyond:

1. WPForms Lite

WPForms Lite is a contact form plugin that is very intuitive and easy to use while remaining powerful fitting a variety of scenarios when it comes to creating and maintaining contact forms.

Much like the Divi Page Builder mentioned below, this has a ‘drag and drop’ type interface which makes things even easier for those unfamiliar with WordPress Plugins and customisation. You can find WPForms Lite at this location or find out more by watching the video below.

2. UpDraft Plus

In our original blog, we mentioned Akeeba Backup that was developed for Joomla in addition to WordPress. UpDraft Plus is another great tool to add to your belt when it comes to having a reliable backup solution for your website. The backup and restore process is very simple and doesn’t require a lot of work and also allows for backups to DropBox and many other cloud based storage solutions.

You can find out more about UpDraft Plus by visiting their website where they dive into detail on features and also compare various different versions of the software.

You can find out more about the plugin on the Simple Share Button’s website.

It’s difficult trying to find new and useful free plugins when so many great solutions already exist, but this is one of the wonders of open source platforms and WordPress in particular. With such a large community of developers and innovators around the world, newer and better solutions for WordPress will always come available, often in the form of free plugins. We’ve not added our own plugin to the above list as we feel this should be best left to others, but agencies like Opace are also contributing to the world of WordPress and trying to aid users in all kinds of areas, in our case, this is SEO – Whether you’re starting a new website or enhancing an existing one, we’re sure you will find something useful in this article and would love to know your thoughts.

Editors Note: We hope you’ve found our 2019 update a useful addition to our previous 2016 edition of essential WordPress plugins below. Be sure to share your own that we missed in the comments or on social media – we love testing out new plugins to expand WordPress’ feature set.

Best free WordPress plugins of 2016

Plugins (sometimes also known as add-ons or extensions) are vital to any WordPress website or blog to increase its ease-of-use, its flexibility and its level of scope. There are thousands of amazing plugins available, some free and some paid, which will allow both you to do a host of wonderful things with your website. Here we list some of the best free WordPress plugins that we’ve used and believe your website can’t be without in 2016.

1. ‘Akismet’ – Spam Prevention

Best served for people looking to set up a WordPress blog, Akismet is an excellent one-stop guard against all spam comments. This spam would otherwise negatively affect your reputation and SEO ranking if they were allowed to get through. TinyPNG compresses your JPEG and PNG images to the optimum size to ensure that your WordPress site will run faster, while nothing is lost in regards to image quality. The plugin itself is free but you pay on a ‘per image’ basis for the compression service. On average, JPEG images will be compressed by 40-60% and PNG by 50-80%, compression can be done in bulk or ‘on the fly’. The plugin provides some useful options to control your costs but even with hundreds of images the costs are still relatively low and the service in our experience is great compared to others out there. Used in conjunction with a plugin like W3 Total Cache the speed improvements can be impressive  –
